Modelzone is the UK’s largest model retailer with 25 stores including outlets in prestigious high footfall shopping centre locations such as Bluewater, Lakeside, Metro Centre, The Trafford Centre and Meadowhall, as well as stores in major cities such as London, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham and Leeds.
Modelzone’s aim is to bring the very best and latest high quality models to a wide audience by catering for both the casual shopper and dedicated collector alike.
All Modelzone stores are an Aladdin’s cave of display cases stacked full of all the latest exciting products. They are staffed by friendly knowledgeable people whose aim is to offer a level of product presentation and customer service unrivalled in our sector.
When Model Aerodrome, established for 40 years under the same ownership in Brighton came on the market, the present owners, local importers of many prestige ranges, saw the opportunity to acquire a showroom for its products. This venture proved successful and a further four shops at Crawley, Eastbourne, Guildford and Maidstone were opened, all adopting the Model Aerodrome name. At this stage a new computerized stock control system was put into operation, while the ranges stocked were standardised.
Further expansion occurred in 1995 when a famous model shop in Croydon came on the market. With the new systems in place, it was easy to add a sixth shop to the chain. A similar opportunity in 1996 saw the company expand outside the south-east for the first time by acquiring a model shop in Plymouth.
In March 1999 the next opportunity for expansion presented itself in the form of the Bluewater development in Kent. The landlords proved more than helpful and together it was possible to present a model shop that was different, meeting the demands of today and appealing to all ages. This store proved immensely successful with large stocks from market leading brands such as Corgi and Scalextric and with fantastic staff, hundreds of customers came in from the bustle of the main complex and not just collectors, car enthusiasts liked the larger scale models, Formula One followers who supported a particular driver, and kit makers who liked a challenge all found their way into the store.
At this time it was felt that the name Model Aerodrome was no longer in keeping with the company’s image and the new name was adopted by all the stores.
Since the successful launch of the eighth store at Bluewater, the company has grown to 27 stores nationwide, from Plymouth in the South West to Newcastle in the North East and the expansion continues. In August 2007 that first shop in Brighton was extended into the units on either side to be re-opened as a brand new store, over four times its former size.
With stores up and down the country, there’s never been a better time to visit Modelzone and see for yourself why we’re the biggest model store in the UK.
