Bachmann Class 55 Deltic 55018 Ballymoss BR Blue DCC Sound
Class 55 diesel locomotives were built between 1961 and 1962 for high speed passenger services between London King's Cross and Edinburgh. With the nickname 'Deltic' from the powerful twin Napier 'Deltic' engines orginally designed for ship-bound use with the Royal Navy, 22 of them were produced and used along the East Coast Main Line.
With a top speed service of 100mph, service in the 1960s and 70s continued until a new generation of coaches were introduced in the early 70s. By 1978, withdrawal commenced with the introduction of the faster 125 mph high speed trains. Six locos are currently preserved including the prototype English Electric DPI 'Deltic', which is currently part of the National Collection at Shildon.
