Bachmann Class A2 526 Sugar Palm LNER Apple Green
The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) A2/3 Class locomotives were originally designed as a class of 30 modern Express Passenger engines by the then Chief Mechanical Engineer Edward Thompson. Following the retirement of Thompson and his succession by A.H. Peppercorn, it was decided that the remaining fifteen un-constructed A2/3 locomotives, should be built to a modified design. Peppercorn oversaw the redesign work and these later fifteen locomotives became know as Peppercorn A2s.
The first of the Peppercorn A2s No.525 A.H.Peppercorn was out-shopped from Doncaster in December 1947 on the eve of nationalization. The modernity of the design was immediately apparent. The first two of the class were turned out in LNER apple green livery and this colour was also applied to the next 13 engines delivered between January and August 1948. Repainting in British Railways Brunswick green began the following year.
Withdrawal occurred between 1962 and 1966, one locomotive 60532 Blue Peter has been preserved.
