Derby Lightweight 2 Car DMU BR Green With Speed Whiskers

Introduced in 1954, the Derby Lightweights were the first DMUs to be employed by British Railways, a significant proportion of the structure was constructed from a light metal alloy, making the vehicles more streamline and efficient than the heavier steam locomotives that they replaced. A preserved twinset of Derby units can be seen at the Midland Railway, Butterley, restored with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund as a result of a high profile campaign in the 1990s.
