Coming from the most popular brands including Revell, Airfix, Dragon and Polar Lights these kits are absolutely guaranteed to keep the kids (or more likely, yourself...) busy for days on end.

Tim's first model kit, aged 27½

Having worked at ModelZone for a while now and seeing the fascinating array of models, gadgets and gizmos coming across my desk I decided to step in to the breach and build myself a Model Kit.

The problem of which one to choose then hit me; from the classic Spitfire to the awe inspiring Apollo Lander the range seems endless. I landed on a new set of planes that looked simple enough to build and that I thought were funny, the Egg Plane by Hasegawa. So I picked up my P-40 Warhawk, a few paints, glues and brushes and set off home for the weekend.

The building of the plane was surprisingly easy, the parts fit together well and the instructions were detailed enough that I had all of the parts together in about 3 hours (I know some of you pro’s are laughing, but this was my first one...) and I didn’t glue myself to it once.

The painting was a little more challenging and, although the Humbrol paints I had bought covered very well, my lack of skill really started to show its self during my custom paint job but after 1 or 2 coats of each colour and some fiddling about with the decals my work was done.

Overall I’m quite impressed with my little Egg Plane and it is taking pride of place on my desk. Check out the pictures below, both during the build and the finished article.

Now I’m thinking of moving on to something bigger and more challenging so I’m looking for suggestions. What do you think would be the best-second Model Kit for me to have a go at?

The scientific community is buzzing after news broke that NASA’s Kepler telescope has found the most Earth-like planet ever seen outside our solar system.

It is the first planet that NASA has confirmed orbits in a star’s habitable zone (or the Goldilocks Zone) which is the region around a star where liquid water can exist.

Ladies Day At Modelzone

Here at Modelzone, just as it is at Cheltenham, its Ladies day!  Down on the mystical Island of Sodor, the engines under the watchfull eye of the fat controller are getting ready for another busy day, from passenger rides to places of work and back, to deliveries to the seaside.

Thomas and his adventures, along with his freinds are known throughout the world. Theres Gordon, Percy, James and Toby to name a few, but there are a number of hard working lady locos to. So today, being ladies day, we thought it would be appropriate to take the spot light of the boys and give the ladies their time. Step forward....

Lady -  Lady is a very special golden engine who holds the secret to The Magic Railroad. With her use of the magic gold dust, she was able to travel to the Island of Sodor and help Thomas defeat Diesel 10.

Rosie - Rosie is feisty, fun and very free-spirited. Rosie is a tomboy tank engine...despite the fact that she's pink! She's almost the same size and has the same capability as Thomas - whom she idolizes.

Daisy - Daisy is a classy, sassy passenger diesel. She believes she should only carry passengers and never pull trucks, though she soon learns the hard way.

Emily - Emily is a beautiful engine with shiny paintwork and gleaming brass fittings. After she rescued Oliver and Toad when they were stuck on the tracks, Sir Topham Hatt rewarded her with a brand-new pair of coaches.

Madge - Madge is a snub-nosed truck with a three-wheeled cab and a flatbed. What she lacks in elegance, she makes up for in strength and personality. She is the prime organizer of the little engines but she can be playful and loves a joke.

Molly - Molly is a large, powerful and bright yellow engine. She is proud of her strength and wants it to be used and useful. As well as being mighty, however, Molly is also sensitive. She's very aware of what the other engines think of her and wants them to think the best.Molly shies away from conflict as she finds it upsetting. On her first day, she was teased for pulling empty wagons. She felt inferior to the other engines, and wanted to feel just as useful as them. However, in the end, Molly saw sense (thanks to Thomas) that even empty wagons can be just as important as loaded ones.

And remember...These and all your favourite Thomas character's can be found in our dedicated Thomas area.

Big Kits, For Big Kids!

Airfix have always been known for their fantastic range of plastic kits. Their ranges span aircraft, boats and cars and virtually everything in between and in a scale to match all collections and space. Their models are always great fun to build and paint and the end result is usually an accurate representation of the real subject....depending on your skill level.

When Airfix announced that they were going to release a large scale plastic kit of the Mosquito you already have an image of a model and how it will look in the box and made up. How wrong I was........

contents

This stunning 1/24th scale model measures a massive 522mm in length and has a very impressive 688mm wingspan. The box itself is big and when you take the lid off the box is full of large sized, highly detailed parts. Everything is covered from engine detailing parts, weapons and crew. As a straight out the box job, you could achieve a stunning model with a lot of detailing parts being hidden in the construction.

However, with a bit of time and some clever thinking you could very easily achieve a finish worthy of any model magazine buy simply going to town on this model and producing cutaway sections to reveal some of the detailed areas otherwise hidden. The A3 Sized instruction book leaves nothing to chance and the full colour inserts provide excellent colour guides for both the aircraft and crew.

If you are looking for a project model over the winter break or something for a long term project you simply must have this model. However, if this looks a little beyond your current modelling skills fear not. Our huge selection of Airfix models and accessories is sure to have something for you and it doesn’t take long to move along the modelling skill road.
