It’s been 110 years since Meccano first went on sale and it’s still one of the most recognisable toy brands in the world. With it’s strips of perforated metal, cogs, pulleys, nuts and bolts the basic components haven’t changed much over the years. The addition of electric motors, moving parts and other electronics recently have kept Meccano from becoming old-hat and has made sure that this wonderful and enduring toy remains firmly at the top of the wish lists of kids of all ages.

“So Brawn or Red Bull?”

Who is your money on and more importantly, who do you want to win the championship?

I for one will be cheering on the Red Bull team. I have nothing against Jenson, he has been waiting for this opportunity of a title-winning car since his first season back in 2000, (Williams BMW’s first season together before their split in 2005) but I have lived in Milton Keynes all my life and always looked out for our local team.

sgp-wikipediaorgIt all started with the Stewart GP team ran by former three time f1 world champion Jackie Stewart and his son Paul (a customer of ours-likes his rc helicopters!) from the Blakelands industrial (later moving to tillbrook) estate in MK. The team ran from1997-99 achieving a podium finish at Monaco in their first season and one win and one pole position before selling up to ford at the end of 1999 and turning into  Jaguar Racing.

At the end of 2004, Ford decided to sell and the team was bought late in 2004 by Dietrich Mateschitz Founder of the Red Bull energy drinks company before emerging as Red Bull Racing in 2005. It has been almost five years since then and the team have earned themselves 4 poles, 3 wins and 2 fastest laps. It is really great to see our hard working local boys doing so well after almost five years at it, I really hope that they can take the fight to Brawn GP to the last corner of the last lap of the last race just as last year with Massa and Hamilton only with A Red Bull finishing on top!

So, Sebastien Vettel; or Mark Webber then? Well personally I don’t mind, Vettel seems the most naturally fast of the two drivers but Webber has been a very hard worker and (usually) an excellent qualifier ever since his first season with Minardi back in 2002. He has suffered some of the most appalling luck seen in Grand Prix motor racing. Many times over the years Mark has been pushing a Minardi, Jaguar,Williams or Red Bull way beyond their respected performance levels only for it to end short of the flag and usually in a big cloud of smoke.

Vettel is a Driver expected to be around and very successful for years to come and scored the team’s first win in China this year. He was the revelation of 2008, pushing the Torro Rosso (also designed in Milton Keynes by Red Bull technologies) to its limits and beating the bigger sister Red Bull team. There have been some silly moments i.e crashing out at Monaco this year, but we have to remember (and it is easy to forget!) he is only in his second season of F1 and Hamilton had similar moments in his second
season last year and ended up champion. Even Michael Schumacher had some silly moments early in his career, which obviously didn’t hinder him (see San Marino & Magny Course 1992 or Donington & Suzuka 1993)

Why not Button?
Look! I know Jenson is a Brit and everything and we should all cheer him on but for me there is only one Brit out there and that’s Lewis (if you want to see for sure who is top- click here & have a go yourself!). I’m sorry but it’s like supporting Man U and wishing Man City a good season-it just feels wrong!. Don’t get me wrong there is no malice (not really anyways) but it just doesn’t feel right. I was at Silverstone this year and dead proud to see the reigning F1 champ in action, Sure he didn’t do so well but he tried damn hard and his words of appreciation after the race to the crowd for their support couldn’t have been more sincere.

You won’t find me jumping ship from driver to driver just because the results don’t go the way you’d hoped, just as with Damon Hill in 1997 (with that god awful Arrows Yamaha a18-yeah it looked nice but my daughters Peppa Pig car would have been faster) I’m in for the long haul! You long time Jenson fans will Know what I mean, and Jenson is a very good driver and has put in some excellent races this year and shown that he is hands down the better driver in the Brawn GP team and if he does go on to win the title he would thoroughly deserve it!

I really hope Red Bull can do it though as we have nothing here in Milton Keynes to really shout about and be proud of, honestly NOTHING! (Except an excellent model shop with fantastic, knowledgeable and friendly staff in the Centre MK-of course!) .

We are known here for Roundabouts….

interesting local fact? no, no it isn't!


YES ROUNDABOUTS! The circular constructions invented to allow traffic to travel safely in different directions all at once, oh and a display of cows made of concrete.

Don’t get me wrongI like the place but if your townthe very strange "famous" concrete cows of mk is to be known for anything wouldn’t it be better to say “this is Milton Keynes, home of the  world championship winning Red Bull F1 team” rather than “this is Milton Keynes, we have a lot of roundabouts and some stone cows”-know what I mean.

Anyways just six races to go, Spa, Monza, Singapore, Suzuka, Sao Paulo and Abu Dhabi and who knows what will happen! Come on Red Bull!!!

Some people say that the pan-seared veal with potatoes Anna at the stunning Jules Vern restaurant located up the Eifel tower in Paris is a dining experience not to be missed while others may say that a signature dish at the Passetto restaurant in Rome, with all its fine trimmings and White Truffles from Alba is almost impossible to beat. However, i would argue this with a simple request of Sausage and pie!
What more could one ask for than a good Meat pie or a plate of Bangers and mash! Its part of our history and should be respected so. With so many fine butchers across the country we should be proud of our meaty specialties and eat more. And for a real treat there’s nothing better than a hot Pukka Pie while watching your favourite football team or a sneaky Melton Mowbray pork pie for a quick and tasty snack.
