400 volunteers and enthusiasts laid over 19,000 pieces of Hornby track along a 10 mile route that hadn't seen any sort of train for over 40 years. Although vandalised and stolen sections of track meant that a single battling Hornby Class 395 came to a halt just outside Instow station - a little under three miles short of the finish line - all the track was laid and for a short time Barnstaple and Bideford were once again linked by a railway line.
Budding Engine Drivers of all ages have the chance to win one of two fantastic Hornby prizes: Eurostar Train set and a City Industrial Train Set.
The Eurostar set captures the elegance of the 300kph Eurostar train perfectly. As well as a Power driving unit, dummy unit and two passenger saloon coaches, the set includes a large oval track with two sidings and points, buffers, a TrakMat and a controller.
The City Industrial set features a saddle tank steam loco and assorted freight and passenger coaches and wagons that would have plied small branch lines serving towns and villages like Bideford. The set includes an oval of track, points, buffers, trackside accessories and a power controller.
