Crossley DD42 Bus SOUTH SHIELDS CHICHESTER

The South Shields Tramways Co started operating horse drawn trams on corporation owned tracks in 1883, only to close three years later.  The South Shields Tramways and Carriage Co restarted the service in 1887 with horse buses but sold out to the British Electric Traction Co in 1899.

The fleet reached a total of 60 before closures commenced under the ownership of the Corporation in 1938. This bus was a part of one batch of Crossleys to be delivered after the war in a South Shields blue and primrose version of Manchester’s pre-war streamline design.

South Shields was merged with Newcastle to form Tyneside PTE on October 1st 1969 and then later that year it became Tyne and Wear PTE.  Various takeovers and name changes have led to the service now being a part of Stagecoach from 1994 to present.
