Corgi Rover 1:36 Mini Mania Cooper Surf Blue
By the early 1990s Mini production was starting to wind down and would have finished earlier had BMW not purchased the Rover Group in January 1994. BMW’s marketing department identified the Mini brand as one of Rover’s most important assets so their engineers immediately set about looking at what was needed to keep the Mini in production until an all new replacement could be launched. Market presence was now much more important than profit. The result was a huge package of improvements and modifications, the most radical in the car’s lifetime.
The most important mechanical modification was a move to multipoint injection and a front mounted radiator. This latter change halved the car’s external noise level and was necessary because the mechanical radiator fan no longer met drive-by noise regulations. In addition the interior was fitted with a driver’s airbag, door intrusion beams, seatbelt pre-tensioners, extra sound deadening, a 2-speed fan, moulded carpet and luxurious leather trim. Various retro trim options were collected into an accessories catalogue and offered together with a range of re-introduced retro colours such as Almond Green or the Surf Blue modelled here.
This car also features the ‘Sports Option Pack’ or S.O.P., which included 13inch wheels running low profile 175/50 R13 tyres, Koni dampers to control the greater unsprung weight, ultra-wide body-coloured spats, four auxiliary lamps, oil-pressure and voltage gauges, and a large bore tailpipe finisher. Although the S.O.P. reduced the car’s top speed to 84mph (because of the larger tyres’ aerodynamic penalties) and reduced the 0-60 time by 0.6sec it was chosen by 50% of buyers. The S.O.P. was unique to the last batch of Minis manufactured before the Longbridge Mini production lines ceased on Wednesday 4th October 2000 after 5,387,862 Minis had been produced.

Darren’s first race was in 2004 in a Mini Miglia borrowed from Ralph Saunders. Darren joined Mini Se7en in 2006 and had his best year in 2011 with two podium finishes and leading the first few laps at Thruxton in August. Darren derived his interest in racing from working at Pitstop and had his first ever racing experience at Silverstone. His Mini, as modelled here, was originally built by the Haymans but Darren has since stripped it to its bare shell. Over the years he has consistently repainted, updated, and made various other improvements to it. He has carried out all work on the car including panel work, body work, re-spray and engine development himself.

Aaron began racing in 2001 in the Pro-Kart circuit when he competed in the South East Pro Kart Championships. By 2005 he was crowned champion, moving onto the Senior Open Class races and winning again in 2008. Aaron was introduced to Mini Se7en Racing in 2009 by Paul Simmonds. After a couple of visits to rounds to see what the racing was like and what went on at meetings, Aaron then went on to join the Mini Se7en Racing Club. His first Mini Se7en race was in the same year at Rockingham and he finished 12th out of the nineteen competitors. Aaron’s Mini cannot be missed on the track in its bright pink livery with the Great Ormond Street logo. The car has been racing since 1990 with many previous owners including Mike Jackson, Colin Peacock and Sarah Munns.
To date, Aaron’s racing career highlight was in 2010 when he won the last race of the season at his home circuit, Brands Hatch. Coming 2nd in the first race he went on to win the second race and made his first appearance on the podium. All of this was achieved in just his second year of Mini Se7en racing. From a young age Aaron would attend races with his father and brothers at Brands Hatch at every opportune moment and is still a keen spectator as well as champion competitor.

Marks passion for racing started in the 90's when he raced an 'ex Works Tony-Kart' for the London Karting Club. After a number of years out of racing, Mark decided to re-enter the racing fraternity and this time in the Mini Miglia Championship in 2008 for one race. It only took until 2010 until Mark had completed a full season in his Mini Miglia and in that year he was rewarded with the 'Novice Title', and finished 9th overall in the Championship. Mark alongside Remco Graffix have created a trailer for his car in the design of a life size Corgi Mini Mania Box.
This limited edition feature is part of the Mini Mania range.
