Avro Lancaster B MkI LM220, RAF 9 Sqn, 'Getting Younger Everyday' Limited Edition

As the war neared its end the Germans were concealing more and more of their important facilities underground in heavily fortified and defended positions with targets such as U-boat pens being protected by thick concrete roofs.

As early as 1941 the great engineer Barnes Wallis had begun design on a bomb that would be able to penetrate deep underground and then explode. He called it his ‘Earthquake’ bomb, this later became the prototype of the ‘Tallboy’ bomb. Weighing 12,000lbs, the Tallboys were first used against the Saumur railway tunnel in Western France and went on to prove their effectiveness against U-Boat pens, bunkers and the famous German battleship Tirpitz. This particular machine belonged to 9 Squadron RAF, one of only two squadrons that dropped Tallboys. On the night of the 11th January 1945 this machine helped penetrate 3.5m of concrete above the U-Boat pens at Bergen, destroying the intended target.

Oxford Diecast 1:72 G-AIYR Classic Wings Duxford DH Dragon Rapide

The de Havilland Dragon Rapide was originally introduced in the mid 1930s as a highly successful British passenger bi-plane used for short haul flights. A military version of the Rapide - the Dominie - was used as a navigation and radio trainer aircraft and G-AIYR first flew in 1943 in RAF livery with serial number HG691. After WWII, she subsequently reverted to civilian use, appearing at shows and exhibitions.

Following restoration to her RAF markings, this particular Dragon Rapide is now used by the company Classic Wings for pleasure flights out of Duxford. Our 1:72 scale model is a replica of G-AIYR in her RAF guise painted in a satin aluminium finish with yellow propeller tips, wing and fuselage bands. Her serial numbers appear in black on the upper wings and on the sides of the fuselage. Exhaust pipes and tyres are also black and the window glazing is finished in silver. A final detail includes a transparent nose cone.

The Grumman f-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two seat, variable-sweep wing aircraft. It first flew on the 21st December 1970. The F-14  was the United States Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platform from 1974 to 2006. It later performed strike misssions once it was intergrated with the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night LANTIRN system.

The F-14 was developed after the collapse of the F-111B project, and was the first of the American teen-series fighters which were designed incorporating the experience of air combat against MiGs during the Vietnam War.

Dragon 1:72 Kfz.70 6x4 Personnel Carrier w/3.7cm PaK 35/36, Eastern Front 1943

The Kfz.70 6x4 Truck served throughout WWII after mass production commenced in 1933. Some 7,000 trucks were produced up until 1942 and the vehicle was powered by an air-cooled 3.308-liter flat-four engine. The horizontal engine gave rise to the truck’s distinctive, sharply sloped nose, and also to its nickname “Boxer”. The truck was used for all kinds of purposes, and it was commonly employed for towing light artillery such as the 3.7cm Pak 35/36 antitank cannon. Now Dragon Armor is getting in on the action with a new fully built-up model in a personnel carrier configuration, in which state it was known in German nomenclature as the Kfz.70.

The Kfz.70 6x4 truck is finished in a winter camouflage scheme of white swirled over the panzer gray basecoat. It isn’t known what unit the truck originally stemmed from, but it did serve on the Eastern Front in 1943. The wheels and independent coil spring suspension are masterfully represented, as is the raking hood. To add to the item’s appeal and value, the truck is towing a gray-colored 3.7cm PaK 35/36 anti-tank cannon as well. This 6x4 truck was a workhorse of the German military during WWII, and here Dragon Armor has put it to good use towing a common early-war anti-tank cannon.

Dragon 1:72 German Halftrack pulling 3.7cm PaK 35/36 Kurland 1944

Dragon Armor released a 1:72 scale model of an Sd.Kfz.251/1 Schützenpanzerwagen towing a 3.7cm PaK 35/36 anti-tank gun earlier. Now this fantastic combination is being reoffered, but this time the model portrays a different unit. Armed with a 7.92mm machine gun, the Sd.Kfz.251/1 transported and supported German panzer-grenadiers in battle. More than 15,000 examples of the Sd.Kfz.251 halftrack were produced during WWII, and this Dragon Armor item depicts an Ausf.C type, which appeared in mid-1940. Production of the Ausf.C featured a simplified forward engine armored plate, although its many angled plates still made it difficult to manufacture efficiently.

This 1:72 scale model features a halftrack and anti-tank cannon combination from Panzergrenadier-Regiment 12 of 4. Panzer-Division. The 4th Panzer Division fought on the Eastern Front before being trapped as part of Heeresgruppe Nord at Kurland on the Latvian coast in late 1944. The Sd.Kfz.251/1 Ausf.C is finished in an attractive three-color camouflage scheme while the PaK 35/36 wears a plain sand yellow coat. It is interesting that this weak 3.7cm anti-tank gun was still being used at this late point of the war, and perhaps reflects those desperate days. With this release, Dragon Armor has come up with yet another inspirational military combination!

Dragon 1:72 Flakpanzer V Coelian German 1945

Germany’s Luftwaffe was numerically outnumbered as WWII progressed, with the Fatherland and tactical units constantly being bombed and strafed by enemy aircraft. This called for more effective antiaircraft systems than Germany hitherto possessed, which initially were often poorly protected halftracks. New self-propelled AA types were put into service, including the Flakpanzer IV. A new type was also planned – the Flakpanzer V “Coelian” from Rheinmetall. The Coelian featured a special armored turret that would protect the crew inside the vehicle. It used a standard Panther tank chassis upon which were mounted twin 3.7cm FlaK 43 cannons.

What sets this Dragon Armor item apart from the previous release of the Flakpanzer V “Coelian” is its painting. Instead of an overall coat of sand yellow paint, this 1/72 scale model is finished in a late-war three-color scheme. This fine model features the correct dual antiaircraft guns mounted based on a Panther chassis, and the fully enclosed turret is a new molding. It carefully replicates the prototypical turret structure that never actually got to see combat. This turret and associated gun system are made true to scale. While this system never had the requisite time to get off the drawing board, Dragon’s engineers are proud to bring this second exciting model to collectors’ display cabinets!
