Earlier Escorts had built their reputation on race tracks and rally stages. However, in the post Quattro world of 1981 a front-wheel-drive 1600cc car could not win rallies outright, so Ford’s German Rallye Sport division developed the RS1600i as a ‘class’ racer.

Using the XR3i as a base, Mike Kranefuss and his team fitted an aluminum front cross-member, anti-dive geometry, thicker anti-roll bars, bespoke front struts, solid valve lifters and a high compression head. The result was less civilised than an XR3i, little faster and, at £6700, much more expensive. It did, however, have much greater tuning potential for motorsport.
