From 1944 onwards warfare at sea for the Germans became ever more difficult. Their surface fleet had either been destroyed or did not dare venture out to sea. Their submarine fleet was losing the battle to better equipped Allied ships and detection technology. The one area of maritime prowess they still had was the fast motor torpedo boat or S-Boat. Patrolling the English Channel and the Baltic, these vessels were subject to ever more frequent air attacks by a numerically superior enemy, so designers and crews concentrated on higher fire power and speed as well as more effective air defence.

The final version was the Type S-100, produced after 1943 and regarded as the best high-speed torpedo boat of its period armed with the four-barrelled Flak C38 anti-aircraft gun. They proved their worth on escort and protection duties, minefield reconnaissance patrols and above all in combating surface units and enemy submarines.
