Amongst the most famous naval vessels of WW II, the "Yorktown" Class Aircraft carriers – Enterprise, hornet and Yorktown – were essential to prosecuting the war ion the Pacific and soon became the US navy’s new capital ships. CV 6 U.S.S. Enterprise was launched in 1936 and displaced some 19,800 tonnes. Crewed by 2,919 seamen and naval aviators, Enterprise had a top speed of 33 knots, used 3 catapults to launch its 81 aircraft. Enterprise was involved in the battles of Midway, Guadalcanal, Gilbert-Islands, Kwajalein, Saipan, Palau, Leyte, Iwo Jima and Okinawa – where she was attacked by Kamikazes from the 11th to the 13th May 1945.
