U.S. 3 Inch Gun M5 On Carriage M1(Early Version)
The U.S. Army mainly used foreign cannons during World War I, and it was not until 1940 that the American developed M3 37mm anti-tank saw services in the US Army . Lightened m3 anti-tank guns were suitable for infantry, yet the artillery was looking for heavier guns.
In Europe, the war reached its peak, which made the US Army to demand more effective anti-tank weapons. Therefore Army Ordnance Corps integrated existing resources – using 105mm howitzer carriage, breechblock assembly and recoil system, adopting T9 3-inch barrel (converted from M1918 anti-aircraft gun). The prototype was introduced on September 1941, and the result was to the Army’s satisfaction. The gun was officially designated as M5, and the carriage was designated as M1. Mass production was commenced in December 1942.
