During the Second World War the USA raised five paratroop divisions of which the 82nd and the 101st were deployed most often as a prelude to mayor allied campaigns, like the invasion of Italy, Normandy and Holland. Yet the US paratroopers also distinguished themselves also in purely defensive operations, as in the Ardennes for example.
