22nd January 1879 - After the Battle of Isandhlwana, South Africa
Lieutenant Coghill and Teignmouth Melvill were trying to save the Queen's Colour of the Regiment.
While crossing the River Buffalo both officers were being pursued by Zulu warriors, Lieutenant Coghill went to the rescue of Melvill as he had lost his horse in the strong current of the river. The Zulus eventually caught them up and following a short but gallant struggle, both were killed.
Both officers received the Victoria Cross and were the first to receive it after they had died.
